VEXED WITH LEARNING? Movement is the language of the brain and motor skills affect your posture and reflect developing brain functions. Academic learning requires a calm nerve system and checkups for school age children can produce calmness, help with learning, and improve overall health. Midleton chiropractor Dr. Lise Pedersen is an expert, with a special interest in paediatric care. Learning difficulties are more and more common in children, and gentle chiropractic treatments using Neuroimpulse (unique to Midleton Chiropractic and Munster), allow the body to restore and often even establish nerve connections in areas lacking proper function.  Treatment is as gentle as cranial osteopathy and available from birth onwards.  One of Dr Pedersen’s clients is a mother whose 1 year old twin boy with torticollis and scoliosis. Within 5 visits the boy no longer has scoliosis, his general temperament is now mellow and more inquisitive and the family, not only is delighted, but knows how to meet his needs and when he needs to come in for checkup.

It's ok to ask!

Being a parent is one of life’s absolute privileges, bringing enormous joy and happiness. But it also can bring significant challenges. The growth of materialism, consumerism, the internet and social media have created a whole new set of pressures that simply didn’t exist when today's parents were growing up. The more informal, relaxed parent-child relationship that exists today - while undoubtedly a good thing – can, at times, make home life a lot more complicated.  Often parents expect that they should know all the answers. They couldn’t possibly.  No child comes with a handbook and every child and every parent is different.  Parentline is a helpline for parents. Somewhere to pick up the phone and talk to somebody who will offer a sympathetic ear, in confidence and who won’t judge (either you or your child). Sometimes it is just a little niggle, sometimes it is something bigger. Sometimes you just need to bounce something off someone. Parentline's trained facilitators are there for you and will give you support, information and guidance.  The helpline is open Monday to Thursday from 10 am - 9 pm and Friday from 10am to 5pm.  It is FREE and no appointment is necessary - just call 1890 927277 or 01 8733500.

Whatever age your child is, whatever the issue - it’s ok to ask.

Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan, TD, launches National Anti-Bullying website

As part of the implementation of the Government’s Action Plan on Bullying, the Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan T.D. has launched a national anti-bullying website www.tacklebullying.ie.

The tacklebullying.ie website, which was developed by the National Anti-Bullying Research and Resource Centre (ABC) at Dublin City University, provides information, support and advice for students, teachers and parents on how to recognise and deal with bullying behaviour and allows teenagers to share experiences with their peers online.

The launch of the website is part of the final phase of implementation of the Government’s Action Plan on Bullying. The Action Plan, which was published in January 2013, sets out twelve actions to help prevent and tackle bullying in primary and post primary schools. The actions focus on support for schools awareness raising and research. Speaking at the launch in DCU, the Minister congratulated the Anti-Bullying Centre on developing this “invaluable resource” that would provide “a single point of information and support for young people, parents and teachers affected by bullying”.

The Minister also highlighted some other recent developments in the implementation of the Action Plan and formally launched a piece of research into preventing school bullying of children with special needs or disability, which was published by the National Disability Authority earlier this year.

Does your child suffer from dyslexia, reading difficulties and visual stress?

Visual stress is sensitivity to patterns which can make reading extremely difficult and uncomfortable. Dyslexia refers to reading problems and while visual stress is not the same as dyslexia; is more common in those who are dyslexic but can also affect non-dyslexic children.

The Colorimetry & Visual Stress Clinic in Midleton Co. Cork will assess whether colour can alleviate patient’s symptoms. A full eye examination is carried out initially, followed by various checks to determine if visual stress is present. If visual stress is present the use of an instrument called a Colorimeter which uses up to 10,000 different wavelengths or colours will determine the most precise and effective colour required for precision tinted lenses. The precision tinted lenses are sourced through the practice.

"It was like a switch being turned on when the coloured lenses were put in front of him , he could see the print clearly, we both cried that day - I just couldn't believe it" Mum to 8 year old Cian.

“Homework isn't a 3 hour task anymore!” Mum to 11 year old Maeve.

SPECIAL KIDS MEDICAL CLINIC was set up in 2014 with the aim of helping thousands of families in Ireland who have a child with special needs. The business takes a functional medicine approach to a variety of complex conditions including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorders, Tic Disorders and Down Syndrome.  The clinic aims to optimise each patient’s nutritional status and ensure that key metabolic pathways are supported when necessary.

As a mother of a child with autism spectrum disorder and a GP, Dr Amy Herlihy offers both a personal and professional insight into your child's unique condition.  With one in 50 children now being diagnosed with autism and many more with ADHD, dyslexia, allergies and other autoimmune conditions medical practitioners need to look beyond the labels and think about the causes.  All of these conditions have underlying complex metabolic problems that need to be helped to help each child reach their potential.

Special Kids Medical Clinic looks beyond labels and examines the root causes.  Each child is individually assessed to elicit the underlying causes for their behaviors.  By helping these metabolic disorders through dietary changes and nutritional supplements, behaviours can be greatly improved.
